Radiation Oncologists

‘Murali‘ graduated as a doctor, from ‘Madras University’ in Chennai, India in 1992. He moved to the UK in 1995 for further medical training. He completed specialist clinical oncology training in Sheffield and thereafter was appointed as Consultant Clinical Oncologist in May 2004. He moved to Scotland in January 2014, and took early voluntary retirement from the NHS in 2018. During this period in the UK, he was a Principal Investigator and Co-investigator for a number of important clinical trials, and was involved in Medical Education. He was the Lead for the Speciality Module for the Undergraduate Medical Curriculum at Sheffield University between 2010-2013, and won the University of Sheffield Medical School ‘Clinical Teaching Award’ in 2012 and 2013.

He moved to New Zealand in 2018, and initially worked in Waikato DHB before joining the Kathleen Kilgour Centre in August 2019. Murali specialises in radiotherapy for breast cancer and lung cancer. He also has extensive experience with chemotherapy and other systemic therapies as part of his role as a Clinical Oncologist in the UK. He has trained in conventional radiotherapy planning methods in the early 1990s and is competent with more recent advances in radiotherapy including IMRT, IGRT, VMAT and SABR.

Murali also has a co-editorial contract for an oncology textbook. He supports a UK-based charity providing medical aid to the Palestinians in Gaza, via setting up a weekly online breast cancer multidisciplinary meeting (MDM) to improve care to patients in this region. He also supports medical education in Gaza through this charity.

In his spare time, you may find him riding his motorbike, playing cricket or flying light aircraft.
